Boy Exploring a Cavern

Boy Exploring a Cavern

Do you have an adventurous little one excited by stories of great exploration? Don’t let that curiosity fade. Our great state of Texas is filled with caves and caverns for you and your family to explore. And, we’ve created a list of three great locations you can reach in roughly two hours for a quick weekend quest with your young explorer.

Wonder World Cave And Adventure Park

Estimated travel time: 1 hour and 40 minutes

Wonder World Cave and Adventure Park is one of the only cave systems created by an earthquake that is open to the public for touring. The guided tour winds up and down through the cavern and features fossilized pre-historic life and boulders suspended in mid-air. You can add a train ride through the Mystery Mountain or a visit to the park’s petting zoo to your day as well.

Inner Space Cavern

Estimated travel time: 1 hour and 48min

Discovered by the Texas Highway Department in 1963, Inner Space Cavern is full of wonders. The cavern is home to fossils of long-extinct beasts such as the wooly mammoths and the saber-tooth tiger.  No matter what time of year you go, the temperature of the cavern is a constant of 72 degrees. The cave offers tours with varying levels of difficulty, and there are tours suitable for children of early-elementary age and up.

Natural Bridge Caverns

Estimated travel time: 2 hours and 7 minutes

Exploring all there is to offer at the Natural Bridge Caverns is an all-day event.

Underground, Natural Bridge Caverns offers three tours through the cave system. Families with young children can enjoy the LED-lit Discovery Tour. And, for a more intense experience, teenagers and adults can brave the Adventure Tour. Above ground, you and your family can challenge yourselves with the Twisted Trails zip-line, rails, and rope course. Or, you can take on the 5,000 square foot maze. There is also a climbing wall and a miniature mining town. With there is to experience, it’s a good thing the park includes a restaurant for a midday break.
